Leopold Caro 1864-1939

Born in Lviv on the 27th of May, 1864. He studied economy and law at the University of Leipzig. Having returned to his hometown, he studied philosophy, too, and defended a doctoral thesis from the field of law. Then, for many years, he lectured on economy at Jan Kazimierz University of Lviv and in 1924-35 also delivered lectures on economy and social sciences at the Lviv Polytechnic. Caro was an active member of the Polish Economic Society. He published his works in numerous magazines, collaborating with “Czasopismo Prawnicze i Ekonomiczne”, “Przegląd Powszechny”, and “Ateneum Kapłańskie”. In 1932 he was appointed to the post of the vice-president of the Social Council attached to the office of the Primate o Poland. Caro is considered the precursor of Christian solidarism on Polish territories. He was strongly influenced by the ideas of K. Gide, T. Carlyle, L. Bourgeois, and J. Ruskin, but the real foundation of his system was formed first of all by the social teaching of the Church. He died in Lviv on the 8th of February, 1939. His major works include Der Wucher (Leipzig, 1893), Studia Społeczne (Kraków, 1908), Socjologia (Lviv, 1912), Problemy skarbowe państwa polskiego (Kraków, 1919), Równomierność świadczeń w ustawodawstwie (Warsaw, 1920), Ku nowej Polsce (Lviv, 1923), Zasady ekonomii społecznej (Lviv, 1923), Myśli Japończyka o Polsce (Lviv, 1927), and Solidaryzm - jego zasady, dzieje i zastosowania (Lviv, 1931).
